Over the summer, I had the opportunity to connect with communications professionals across Calgary. Whether at our Stampede event or over coffee, a common thread emerged: in a profession that is constantly evolving, community and connection matter more than ever.
When I reflect on my own experience with CPRS over the past twenty-five years, three themes stand out: community, learning and connection.
First and foremost is community. Through CPRS, I have found a network of professionals who understand the challenges and opportunities that come with our work. It has been a place to exchange ideas, seek advice, gain perspective and learn from one another. Along the way, I’ve benefited from the generosity of mentors and colleagues, and I’ve had the opportunity to support others in return.
CPRS has also played an important role in my professional development. From hearing case studies shared by some of Calgary’s leading practitioners to participating in Masterclasses and attending the CPRS National Conference, I have gained knowledge and new perspectives, expanded my skills and stayed current in a rapidly changing communications landscape.
Equally important are the relationships I’ve built through CPRS. Through chapter events, volunteer opportunities, mentorship and national programs, I’ve met colleagues from across sectors and at different stages of their careers. Those connections lead to new ideas, new opportunities and lasting friendships.
For me, some of the greatest benefits of CPRS have come from getting involved. Volunteering, participating in events, mentoring and connecting with fellow members have all enriched my professional journey in ways I never expected. The more engaged you are, the more value you are likely to gain from your membership.
I encourage each of you to find a way to engage this year. Attend an event, join a committee, become a mentor or mentee, or share your expertise through a professional development session. Whatever your career stage or area of practice, there is a place for you in our community.
We look forward to supporting your growth, expanding your network and helping you make the most of your membership in the year ahead.
See you soon,
Lisa Rushka, APR, FCPRS, MCPRS
President, CPRS Calgary
