Making Changes Association was named CPRS Calgary’s partner for #YYCPR – Communications for a Cause, after being voted as the organization of choice by CPRS Calgary members. Our dedicated CPRS Calgary volunteers, approximately 10 strong, have been hard at work lending their skills and talent to help Making Changes communicate about its role and vision, creating futures for women.
“At the end of this process it will be amazing to see what we’re able to contribute to Making Changes, through the combination of our expertise as PR professionals,” stated volunteer Vince Kanasoot. “It will be a great outcome for Making Changes, but has also been a unique and valuable opportunity for the volunteer team as we collaborate and learn from each other.”
In the Fall, our volunteers consisting of local CPRS members and PR practitioners completed an audit of Making Changes’ communications and are now in the process of collaborating to revise and further develop a number of communications pieces.
In order to refresh these pieces, we are working with Making Changes to foster its storytelling and enhance its brand. We want to ensure Making Changes’ stories are communicated in ways that are impactful and engaging to their multiple audience groups including funders, volunteers, partners and potential participants.
“We are very grateful to CPRS for having chosen our organization for their Communications for a Cause initiative,” said Cathy Coutts, Making Changes Executive Director. “The material that CPRS is preparing for us will be instrumental in solidifying our brand and strengthening our profile within Calgary and area. It will also assist us in ensuring that we communicate a consistent message to our various audiences,” added Cathy.
Key deliverables include working on both digital and print communications, including Making Changes’ social media, annual report, brochures, and media relations.
The volunteer team aims to finalize and present the communications materials to Making Changes within the first part of March and then will undertake revisions and edits in coordination with the organization.

Making Changes is a volunteer-based organization that supports women and girls during life transitions and provides them with skills and resources, encouraging their pursuit of meaningful work and educational opportunities. Making Changes achieves this through three core initiatives:
• The Walk-In Closet: Offers one-on-one consultations on professional attire to women facing financial barriers who want to join the workforce, return to school or get involved with volunteer opportunities. Participants are offered gently used clothing and accessories at no cost to help them look and feel their best.
• Employment and Life Skills Program: Offers a series of pre-employment workshop to immigrant women. Through self-discovery, this program encourages critical thinking in a supportive environment so women who are new to this country can not only recognize the skills they already possess, but how to confidently use those skills to successfully advance their career in Canada.
• My Best Friend’s Closet: Provides girls aged 12 to 18 from low-income homes with appointments to select a year’s worth of fashionable and functional clothing to meet their back to school and recreational needs at no cost. Each participant is paired with a peer volunteer stylist who assists them in choosing their clothes and accessories in a fun, retail-style space.
