Come Prepared for Glenna’s ‘Chose Your Own Adventure’ Session on Building Your Personal Brand
Wednesday, president of Cross Wise Communications Glenna Cross, ABC, MC will be presenting Building Your Personal Brand, an audience-driven evening of learning geared towards job searchers – both those who are currently looking and those who will be looking in the future.
As a well-known recruiter who has personally hired countless communications practitioners, Glenna promises that her audience will leave the presentation with tangible take-ways that they will be able to immediately implement in their own job searches and networking activities.
“Everything that goes in to this presentation is very practical and applied,” says Cross. “I’m looking forward to this session being more of a Q&A, so I encourage attendees to come prepared with questions!”
Leveraging technology for enhanced engagement
CPRS Calgary has truly come up with something special for this event by leveraging technology to enhance audience participation. Glenna will provide a bird’s eye view of the recruiting process and speak on three main topics – resume writing, interview skills, and networking – and then subtopics under each of those main sections.
By using their smart phones to vote, audience members will decide which topics and subtopics Glenna will focus her time on. Attendees are also encouraged to post questions for Glenna to answer during her presentation.
What makes Glenna a PR and communications recruiting expert?
Glenna Cross, ABC, MC, founded communications and management consulting company Cross Wise Communications in 1999. The company focuses on building capacity for professional communicators.
For over 15 years, Glenna has specialized in recruiting communicators, communications training, organizational evaluation and design, strategic communications planning, and meeting facilitation to help organizations meet their organizational and communications goals.
“I like to be behind the scenes helping others shine,” she reveals.
Challenging times for practitioners
With the economic decline affecting Calgary particularly hard, communicators searching for jobs are now facing some unique challenges.
Glenna observes that communicators might not see the kind of salary offers they would have seen pre-downturn. In addition, Glenna notes that over many years of career development, many communicators have gone down the path of specialization. Facing tight budgets, employers are often looking for practitioners with more well-rounded skillsets.
Standing out from the crowd
“I love the influence communications can have on business. Communicators are uniquely positioned to be positive influencers and dot-connectors,” says Glenna.
Practitioners often forget to heed their own good advice when is comes to communications excellence. The applications of many well-qualified practitioners are being tossed aside because their authors neglect to follow the instructions, proofread, or customize.
But all is not lost. Glenna offers one simple suggestion that will instantly put you in the good graces of any recruiter. When submitting an application, she says, save your .PDF file with your name as the title so the recruiter doesn’t have to rename the file when he/she saves it.
When asked what she looks for in a communications practitioner, Glenna replied: “I’ll leave that for the presentation.”
I for one look forward to finding out what communications hiring guru Glenna Cross looks for in a communications practitioner!
