MRU’s Marketing and Communication department supports this mission by developing and implementing strategies to support the advancement of Mount Royal’s institutional priorities, and increasing the institution's profile and reputation.

The Senior Media Relations Officer executes media strategies to support day-to-day operations, progress University Advancement goals and advance work to achieve Mount Royal University’s strategic plan. As the first and main point-of-contact for media, the Senior Media Relations Officer protects and promotes the University’s reputation, identifies and oversees issues management and is critical to the communications response in the event of an emergency.

Responsibilities:

• Oversees media policy, guidelines and procedures and implements strategies in line with this framework
• Oversees media relations strategy on sensitive, controversial and confidential issues
• Acts as media lead during emergencies requiring communications response
• Researches, writes and implements strategic media relations plans, which identify key audiences, key messages, scheduling and placement to achieve the University’s strategic goals
• Generates media coverage of department-specific news, information and events by pursuing the best media contacts and mediums for information to be communicated
• Responds to interview requests from external media by arranging interviews with the best spokesperson for the file and briefing interviewees on key messages, strategies and background information
• Maintains regular contact and develops relationship with key media representatives • Manages issues and emergencies by monitoring the media
• Sources, writes and edits stories and copy for internal publications (Face Time), external publications (Summit), and other institutional materials (speeches, guidelines, etc)
• Develops and implements communication plans and lead projects for departments and institutional events

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in combination with 6 - 10 years of experience
• Highly organized self-starter
• Familiarity with media relations in a complex organization
• Experience developing internal media strategies and influencing buy-in and participation
• Grounded in communications theory and practice, particularly related to reputation management, publicity, media relations, issues management and emergency response
• Understands complex situations quickly and interprets/articulates them into messages that are easy to understand and palatable to many stakeholders
• Excellent research and analytical writing skills
